The Occupation of Te Paea 1828-1861

At Mahoenui, Waiwiri lasted long after the reign of te Rauparaha and te Rangihaeata, to whom he was a strong supporter. We were often called the The Rangihaeatas, in other words the Rauparahas, according to the evidence given in 1897.

Mana over land.

We know that te Paea had mana over land at the Mahoenui / Waiwiri Muhunoa, that later was passed to his sons' Karaipe te Puke and Nerehana Te Paea, we know that Te Paea held rights to the Waiariki land at Otaki, that he gifted to Karaipe and Nerehana as well as his brother Arapata Hauturu. This was stated in the Maori Land Court at Otaki July 1867.

We know that Te Paea is still alive in 1863 because of the conversation between Governor Grey and Te Paea regarding a land matter in the Waikato. That Te Paea held rights too. We believe Te Paea died in approximately 1865, he is most certainly dead prior to 1867., because Arapata Haturu states "He is dead now" when he speaks of his Tuakana Te Paea, in July 1867, at the Maori Land Court, Otaki."It should be noted" that it was stated by his sons Karaipe and Nerehana in January 1874 that Te Paea was gifted the land before the Treaty at Waitangi, therefore we believe that Te Paea held the mana even in death and that is why Te Puke, Nerehana, Rakera and others were intimidated by the statement made by Donald McLean, the Chief and Commisioner on February 7th 1874.
