postheadericon From Waikato to the Kapiti Coast

The arrival of Te Paea from the Waikato was a feat in itself. Many people died as they passed through unfriendly territory to reach their destination.

We know there were three Heke (Migration):

1. The first was led by Ruamaioro and Te Puke Ao. Unfortunately Ruamaioro was killed after he retaliated to the death of Parehikitanga who was killed in the Whanganui river area (Rohe). Ruamaiora killed a high ranked chief  which immediately brought retaliation that (according to the book "Taua...") cost the lives of at least 100 Raukawa and many captives were taken.

2. The second Heke is attributed to Ahu Karamu (known as Te Hukiki) who went back to the Waikato to return with the Nga Hapu that Waitohi requested.

3. The thrid Heke is attributed to Whatanui. We know that Te Paea did not come on the Heke.

We believe that Te Paea was in the first or more probably in the second due to his close association with Te Hukiki. These three chiefs were given land by Waitohi with approval of Te Rauparaha. Paetonga (papaitonga) was given to Paea / Paia. This is stated in the book "Kapiti Coast" by W. Carkeek, originally published about 1965.
