About Ngati Hikitanga Te Paea
This section of the website will provide information to the public about the Te Paea family and their association with the Horowhenua district.
We believe that without Te Paea migrating to Horowhenua, we as a people would not exist. Without Te Paea we would never have had land rights in this district.
The crown (through Sir Donald McLean) asserts that the "Horowhenua Block" was sold by Te Paea and Hukiki to "Mr Serang" (Searancke). The statement reads "Puke, your father, Te Paea, and Hukiki sold your land and Mr Serang (Searancke) purchased it".
The descendants of Te Paea, through his Hikitanga Te Paea Hapu, dispute that the land was ever sold by the two men mentioned, and Mr W Searancke through his May 1860 letters denies ever purchasing it.
